Preview: Ary and the Secret of Seasons

Will appear in less than a month Ary and the Secret of Seasons on PC and all consoles. Whether this cheerful adventure is something to keep an eye on, we discuss in our preview.

Ary and the Secret of Seasons may feel a variation on Zelda be called. From the way you hit and move around, to the color palette and the fact that you keep entering dungeons and caves to explore. Yet it does its own thing enough not to be called a simple clone and we applaud that.

The game begins with little Ary telling a story of an old magician who posed a threat to the land. A great hero defeated him and everyone lived happily ever after. As we gamers are used to, this is of course a precursor to what is going to happen. Not much later, a lot of crystals fall from the sky and the seasons are disrupted. This is relevant because the seasons play a major role, each of the four villages has a ‘Guardian of the Season’ and Ary’s father is the guardian of winter. This is how little Ary sets out to set things straight.

In the beginning you have the power of your father’s winter crystal to create a small sphere of winter around you. For example, you can turn puddles into ice and conjure up plateaus to jump from platform to platform and solve “puzzles”. You may see it coming, but during your trip you will also get the power of other seasons and be able to vary them.

In addition to discovering caves and temples, you can also walk around in the open air and complete tasks for the inhabitants of different places. This is not necessary at all, but if you get a fish for a hungry merchant, for example, he will give you a few gold pieces that you can use for new clothing or weaponry. It is nothing special, but it makes the world fill up and feel more alive.

We hope that the game will be cleaned up a bit in this last month. Especially during fighting there are a lot of hitches or sudden camera movements. We also regularly got stuck with certain jumps, so the game assumed over time that we had come off.

The beginning of Ary and the Secret of Seasons is fun. The storytelling is touching and the world is colorful and breathes through the inhabitants who occasionally have something to say or have a task for you. The biggest issues are whether the fairly simple combat system and platform puzzles are expanded enough throughout the game to stay interesting for a long time. If yes then it is Ary and the Secret of Seasons definitely something to keep an eye on.
