Preventing Dry Eye Syndrome During Ramadan – Five Useful Tips

Jakarta: Throughout Ramadan, Muslims are not allowed to eat and drink during the day until late at night. In fact, there are many health benefits associated with fasting. Provided, follow a balanced and healthy diet, in order to maintain overall health during the Holy Month.

However, staying hydrated is a bit more difficult, especially if Ramadan falls during a hot or dry season which makes the weather warmer. Lack of water in the diet can generally cause headaches and fatigue, but it can also cause something called dry eye syndrome.

What is dry eye syndrome??

This syndrome occurs when our eyes cannot produce enough tears. Launching from Cleveland Clinic Abudhabi, normally our tear glands produce a constant supply of tears, which serve as a thin and moist barrier in the eye.

This protective barrier helps the eye expel dust or debris and maintains its general health. If we don’t produce tears, the eyes are vulnerable to any irritant that gets into them. This causes pain, redness, swelling, and a stinging sensation. If left untreated it can cause more serious problems.

Water is needed to help the body carry out all of its natural functions, including producing tears. Because tears consist of oil, mucus, and mostly water. If you don’t drink enough, your body will struggle to produce it. If we don’t fuel ourselves with plenty of nutrients, our most sensitive organs, including the eyes, will be at risk of infection and disease.

How to treat dry eyes

Eyes are the most sensitive part of the body. And maintaining proper eye care is very important. Here are several ways you can do to help maintain overall eye health and prevent dryness, including:

  • Use artificial tear eye drops, so as to keep the surface lubricated.
  • Avoid areas that may have a lot of dust or smoke, which can irritate dry eyes.
  • High-temperature air conditioners can dry out your eyes, so try to get outside to get as much fresh air as possible.
  • Working at a computer for too long can make your eyes dry. Try looking away regularly for at least 30 seconds and making a conscious effort to blink properly.
  • Wear sunglasses when outside during the day to protect your eyes from the sun and airborne elements.

To protect eye health while fasting is to drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet after sunset. If you notice any symptoms of dry eye syndrome, consult a doctor immediately, as this can be a very serious condition.
