Prevent Twindemics, the Importance of Flu Vaccines and Pneumonia During a Pandemic

JawaPos.com – As an effort to deal with the global COVID-19 pandemic that never stops and is even increasing. Many research institutions and vaccine manufacturers around the world are competing to develop a Covid-19 preventive vaccine. However, it turns out that it is not only the Covid-19 vaccine that is important to look forward to, but during this pandemic people are advised to get flu and pneumonia vaccines.

Internal Medicine Specialist and Vaccine Specialist (Internist & Vaccinologist) Dr. Kristoforus Hendra Djaya, SpPD, MBA as Founder, InHarmony Clinics, said that overseas flu and pneumonia vaccines are in high demand. The goal is that during a pandemic people are not susceptible to flu and upper tract infections.

“Why is the flu and pneumonia vaccine important? Because besides killing the virus, it also prevents the appearance of respiratory tract infection symptoms, “he said in the webinar of The 1st Online Vaccinology Forum 2020 (OVF 2020) on November 21-22, 2020.

According to him, during this pandemic, when people have flu and coughs, they will definitely make them paranoid and worried that they have Covid-19. As a result, panic and waste a lot of money on checks.

“Recently can a little cough and cold so paranoid. Could it be Covid-19. In the end, it turned into a swab with a lot of money. Even though the cost of the swab is borne by the government, for example, it is still a burden on the state can. Especially if the swab is independent, “he said.

“If a person is infected with a respiratory tract it immediately becomes a burden for both him and the government,” he said.

Especially when someone has a bad flu, they can go to the hospital too. Even though the current hospital capacity is full of Covid-19 patients.

“That’s why the vaccines that have increased in coverage during the pandemic are flu and pneumonia vaccines. Others have decreased coverage, all vaccines, including children, infants, hepatitis, all have decreased coverage, “he said.

According to dr. Kristoforus, doctors must be able to restore public belief in the importance of immunization, increase immunization coverage, and ultimately save more lives. Doctors must also prevent Twindemics, an epidemic in a pandemic due to reduced immunization coverage. This includes increasing public acceptance of the Covid-19 vaccination which will be launched next year.

“Medical personnel and doctors play a role in educating the importance of the immunization program, so that people want to come again for immunization. Our people are now also afraid to come to hospitals, health centers, clinics. Even though all of them have used health protocols, “he said.

“Therefore, it is necessary to update information on various matters relating to vaccinations and immunizations in the pandemic era for doctors throughout Indonesia,” he said.
