Presidential: Andrzej Duda leads the first round in Poland – World: Europe

Outgoing Conservative Head of State Andrzej Duda leads the first round of the presidential election in Poland and will oppose the liberal candidate in the second round on July 12, according to the partial results announced by the Electoral Commission (PKW) .

The outgoing president obtained 45.24% of the vote, after the counting of 87.16% of the ballots, announced PKW Monday early in the morning. In the second ballot he will face the mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Trzaskowski, who came in second with 28.92% of the vote, according to the same count.

The participation rate was 53.30%

The independent candidate, Rafal Holownia, obtained 13.69% of the vote. No other of the eight candidates crossed the ten percent threshold. The participation rate was 53.30%, according to PKW.

The election campaign was dominated by concerns over the state of democracy and social issues, as Poland faces its first recession since the end of communism following the coronavirus pandemic. The latter forced the authorities to postpone the poll from May to June. (dpa / Le Matin)
