During a bike ride in Rehoboth Beach, a small seaside town where he regularly spends weekends in his villa on the ocean, the president fell around 9:40 a.m., according to a journalist from the presidential pool.
Mr. Biden had wanted to stop to speak to passers-by and reporters waiting for him, but said he had difficulty dislodging his foot from the pedal. He fell sideways, while his bike was immobilized, according to a video of the journalist.
He was immediately surrounded by members of his security, but quickly got to his feet.
Asked about his condition, he replied: “I’m fine”.
The president wore shorts, blue sneakers, a bicycle helmet and gloves. No visible traces of the fall, such as scratches, were visible, according to the journalist.
He then briefly chatted with passers-by, then journalists, and got back on his bike and left about 5 minutes later.
He was accompanied by his wife, Jill Biden, who did not witness the fall, having continued on her way.
The health of all American presidents is closely scrutinized, but that of Joe Biden in particular, due to his advanced age.
