After the decision of the government of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, imposed the use of a mask also abroad , not only in closed places, the President of the Order of Doctors now defends that the measure should also be extended to the entire national territory. According to Miguel Guimarães, Portugal is now “in a critical phase” that could be a key to successfully overcome the arrival of winter and the complications that are expected.
“I think we should seriously think about this measure [uso de máscara no exterior]. It is a controversial, courageous measure on the part of the government of Madeira. It is a measure that other countries have already implemented and we have to think about it ”, said the doctor in statements to SIC Notícias, this Friday, adding that the country enjoys“ good conditions ”at this moment and that they should be used.
“Schools are closed, we are in a height of heat and very high ultraviolet radiation and people more isolated from others, there is still natural social isolation. We have to take advantage of this moment to implement all possible measures in order to completely control the disease and be able to prevent it from having a big impact in the winter ”, warned the expert.
“This is the time to think about these measures and implement them”, recalling the need to define strategies for mass events, for example.
For Miguel Guimarães, it is still necessary to think “a mega national campaign to alert the importance of protecting ourselves and, above all, protecting others for a more peaceful winter”.
On the development of the long-awaited vaccine for Covid-19 , Miguel Guimarães argues that Portugal should “participate in the investigation” in order to guarantee some “advantage”.
“There are laboratories interested in making this participation and, even, research in Portugal. This is very important for us, first because when we participate we are already having an advantage, second because we have to study the possibility of being able to produce too ”, noted the president at SIC Notícias.
According to Miguel Guimarães, guaranteeing the production of the vaccine is a way for Portugal to have “faster access” to the vaccine against Covid-19 to avoid “being on the waiting list” and possible difficulties in access.
