The President of Iceland has been elected for a second term. Gundi Johannesson managed to win 92 percent of the vote, he writes Euronews Sunday.
The 52-year-old historian Johannesson is a strong advocate of LGBTI rights and has scored well in the polls for years. The election turnout was 66.9 percent.
In Iceland, the president has almost no power. The function is mainly ceremonial, except for the right to veto laws.
Johannesson managed to make the Icelandic presidency more informal during his first term. For example, he sometimes picks up garbage outside his home and promised to legally ban a group of children who would be able to eat pizza with pineapple if he could do so as president.
His opponent during these elections, Gumundur Franklín Jónsson, promised to make more use of the right of veto. The outspoken fan of US President Donald Trump received only 7 percent of the vote. Since the independence of Iceland, the veto has been applied only three times in total.
The coronavirus has claimed the lives of only ten people in Iceland, compared to a population of 365,000. The country had to invest 1.8 billion euros in companies after the tourism sector fell sharply.
