President of Alma Mater National Trade Union Federation Discusses Ongoing Teaching Staff Strike in Romania

Anton Hadăr, president of the Alma Mater National Trade Union Federation (which represents teaching staff from the university environment), explained at what stage the discussions with teaching staff are in relation to stopping the teachers’ strike. “People are dissatisfied, and the strike will go on as long as the colleagues support it,” Hadăr said on CNN’s Antena 3.

“Alma Mater has so far failed to complete all the documents necessary to start the strike for unbelievable reasons. It is almost impossible for Romania to declare a strike to be legal. We are looking at another cause, the idea that we are against Romania’s social and comic policies.

We had to get signatures first, spend 10 days in negotiations. And we did it together with the colleagues from the pre-university and after that let’s ask all the colleagues if we can continue after they gave us this emergency order or during Pentecost, you can’t find anyone at school. And we also start from Tuesday to see where we take it in relation to the colleagues from the pre-university, if the strike continues.

As long as one was discussed and another came out as a legislative element, the Emergency Ordinance that we kept talking about during the television tour, it is clear that the world is dissatisfied and the strike will go on as long as those who are behind us, behind our colleagues at the pre-university, in this case, I support the strike, because voting is done in a democratic way, practically any union member votes, what was discussed at the Government, at the presidency comes from us.

You saw that I came from the Presidency, with the approval of the President, and the people in the street made a fool of him. So we go by voting at the lowest level, even to the maid, if she is a union member”, said Anton Hadăr, president of Alma Mater.

The pre-university unions continue their strike

The Federation of Free Trade Unions in Education and the Federation of Trade Unions in Education “Spiru Haret” continue to ask the Government and the ruling parties to assume, through a normative act, the article removed from the Pre-University Education Law and which was not even included in the text of GEO 53/ 2023, but only in the substantiating Note of the ordinance, according to which the salary of the beginning teacher should be at least equal to the gross average salary in the economy, the salary of the entire teaching staff to be realized progressively, in relation to position, studies, seniority and teaching degree.
