Trump stops making payments to WHO

– –

Donald Trump has stopped $ 400 million in payments to the World Health Organization. The WHO failed in the corona crisis and made the wrong recommendations.

Bad to mediocre – these are the marks that the World Health Organization gives to many countries for pandemic preparation. Even highly developed health systems have limited capacity, according to a paper.

DAccording to a media report, the World Health Organization (WHO) attests that many countries do not have good pandemic preparation. Most states worldwide are poorly to moderately prepared for epidemics, the “Spiegel” quotes from a position paper for a video conference scheduled for Sunday by the health ministers of the G-20 states on the corona crisis.

The G 20, which also includes the USA, China and Germany, is currently chaired by Saudi Arabia. The WHO initially did not answer the German Press Agency when asked about the position paper.

Only a third of the countries can detect outbreaks of epidemics and react to them, according to the “Spiegel” in the paper. Even highly developed health systems would then only have “limited capacities” to perform basic services. According to the report, the WHO predicts that in poor countries with weaker systems, the consequences of the corona pandemic would be “devastating”.

According to “Spiegel”, the WHO also complains that there is a lack of well-trained employees and infrastructures in the health systems and that there are no robust supply chains and logistics to procure urgently needed medical equipment. International cooperation functions poorly, above all because “WHO is unable to enable coordination and cooperation”.

US President Donald Trump ordered his country’s payments to WHO to stop on Tuesday. He blamed the organization for the many deaths in the crisis and accused it of dramatically worsening the epidemic with mismanagement and reliance on information from China. Over the next 60 to 90 days, his government would review the role that WHO had played in “poorly handling and hiding the spread of the coronavirus.” That’s how long the payments were on hold. Trump’s move met with international criticism – in addition, the US President himself is accused of having downplayed the crisis for a long time.

According to the “Spiegel”, the WHO calls for the world to respond to the coronavirus pandemic at least as resolutely as it did to the financial crisis of 2008. Among other things, it suggests that a global supply of medical equipment be created to intensify research on pathogens and to create a “mobile global health force” that can be quickly dispatched to outbreaks of disease worldwide.
