Premier of Nova Scotia bows out

Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil on Thursday announced he was stepping down after more than six years as head of the province and 17 years in politics.

Leader of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party since 2007, Stephen McNeil took office on October 22, 2013.

Mr. McNeil will remain in office until his successor as party leader is chosen. A leadership race will be underway in the coming months.

He said he had considered stepping down earlier this year, but the COVID-19 crisis forced him to stay.

Stephen McNeil’s Liberals won the last general election in May 2017 ahead of the provincial Conservatives and New Democrats. The next poll should probably take place next year.
