Premier League footballers launch support fund

Premier League players have announced the launch of an initiative to generate funds to help the British National Health Service during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This initiative, dubbed #PlayersTogether, was set up to “help those who are fighting for us on the front lines of the NHS” in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, said the collective of players in a press release.

“It is for us, as players, to work together to create a voluntary initiative, distinct from any league and / or any club,” he said. “To try to help, with so many others in the country, make a real difference,” added the statement, without giving further details.

Several personalities of English football such as the captain of Liverpool, Jordan Henderson, the player of Tottenham, Harry Kane, and the player of Arsenal, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, put online on social networks information about this initiative.

In early April, the Premier League proposed to cut player wages by 30%. But the British Players Union (PFA) has argued that such a reduction would result in lower tax revenues for the UK budget, which could penalize the NHS.

“All Premier League players want and will play their part by making significant financial contributions in these unprecedented times,” the union said in a statement on Saturday.

Since the start of the new coronavirus crisis, the English Premier League has come under fire from critics for its use of state aid. She has since been trying to find an agreement on salary cuts to save face in the face of an exasperated public opinion.
