Premier League draws its own plan: clubs reject proposal for five substitutes

Although the Premier League clubs will soon be packed with a program, they will not take the opportunity to change five times next season. The English teams want to stick to three substitutes per game, they decided during a vote on Thursday.

The Premier League itself does not make the vote public, but according to British media, eleven teams did not support a five-time change, as they feel that the top clubs will have an advantage.

After the corona break, FIFA and UEFA introduced the option to switch not three but five times. This to relieve players because of the overcrowded program. The national unions can decide for themselves whether they will continue with this for the coming season. The KNVB, among others, has already announced that five substitutes will be allowed in the Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie. Many other leagues also eagerly make use of this rule change.

The Premier League, however, takes its own path. The clubs also voted to expand the game selections, but that proposal did not win a majority either. As a result, there will be no nine next season, but the usual seven players on the reserve bench. The new season starts on September 12, a month and a half after the last round of the previous year.
