Reporting from the Express, Saturday (23/7/2022) Harvard Health says that foods fortified with plant sterols and stanols increase the body’s ability to absorb cholesterol from food.

Many sterols and stanols are added to foods from margarine and granola bars to orange juice and chocolate. Both are also available as supplements.

Harvard Health explains that consuming 2 grams of plant sterols or stanols a day can lower bad cholesterol by about 10 percent. The British Dietetic Association (BDA) says a healthy diet typically contains about 200 to 400 mg of plant sterols and stanols a day.

Changing what you eat and quitting smoking can help bring cholesterol back to healthy levels. The NHS explains that to lower cholesterol, you can reduce fatty foods, especially foods that contain saturated fat.

“You can still eat foods that contain a type of healthy fat called unsaturated fat,” explains the NHS.

In addition, to help lower cholesterol, it is not necessary to avoid fat altogether. Experts recommend reducing foods high in saturated fat and replacing them with foods high in unsaturated fats.

On the other hand, the BDA advises eating lots of fiber to lower cholesterol. This method is proven to help reduce the risk of heart disease. To make sure you get enough fiber, you should eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
