Power failure! UK Massive Power Outage, Crisis?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Several areas in the UK were reported to have experienced power outages Sunday evening local time. This is the first major blackout in the country since 2019.

In the report Express quoted Monday (8/8/2022), power outages were reported in the Southeastern region of England which also includes the capital city of London. In Essex, for example, 514 households were affected by the blackout, including in the town of Chelmsford, where electricity was reported to have recovered by 7:38 a.m.

In one area of Surrey county, the village of Mayford, 459 customers were reportedly affected by a power outage across 16 postal codes. In Suffolk, 58 households were affected by the blackout in areas on the outskirts of Ipswich.

A number of areas in Greater London were also affected. That region includes Beckenham, Eltham, East Ham, Hornchurch and Enfield.

UK Power Networks reports that more than 3,000 customers in total were affected by the outage across the region. This itself is caused by damage to the underground cable network.

“An error occurred in an underground power line affecting some (Southeast England) areas,” said the UK Power Networks website.

Power outages in the UK are now very rare. This is a significant change compared to the days of the 1970s when power outages were commonplace.

But local blackouts still occur for several reasons. For example, natural accidents such as lightning strikes, floods and fallen trees can cause damage to cables and equipment. The contractor may also damage the cables while working on the equipment in some cases.

If this is the case, UK customers may be able to get compensation when their electricity or gas supply goes out. In the event of a power outage, it is the responsibility of the network operator to repair the disconnection and pay compensation.
