Possible coup in Sudan: Prime Minister placed under house arrest | Abroad

The ministry reports that “joint forces” are pressuring Hamdok because they want him to publicly express his support for the coup. According to the ministry, the prime minister refused and would have been taken away.

The ministry reports that the prime minister is calling for peaceful protests. Unions have already called on residents of the capital Khartoum to take to the streets to defend the government. Images from the al-Arabiya channel show people erecting burning barricades in the streets.

In Sudan, the regime of dictator Omar Hassan al-Bashir was overthrown in 2019 after large-scale protests. Since then, a transitional government has been in power, seeking rapprochement with the West and also establishing diplomatic relations with Israel.

The government consists of military personnel and various civilian groups. They must oversee the transition to an all-citizen government. After a failed coup in September, divisions arose. At the time, it was described by Hamdok as the “worst and most dangerous crisis” facing the transition.
