Positive kiwi at Covid-19, do not believe the dangerous “hoax” that feeds disinformation

Can a kiwi be positive for Covid-19? It seems so, at least that’s what an experiment (nonsense) has found, the results of which have been circulating on the net these days.

A video that has had good success and diffusion, especially on social networks, shows 3 men in white coats employed to carry out a quick swab to assess the presence of the coronavirus.

This is done, however, in a very curious way, not to test the possible positivity of a person, but that of a kiwi.

The swab result is positive. But what sense does it make such a test to a fruit? The reason of the creators of the video is simple: to show the unreliability of this tool.

According to the authors of the test, in fact, the positivity of the kiwi would show that we do not know enough about the coronavirus to be able to identify it through a rapid test, since evidently the swab has reacted to other components.

But things are not quite like that. The point is very simple: tampons are made to be used (and to give reliable results) on people. Analyzing a kiwi is therefore useless and misleading.

We are faced, once again, with one of the many fake news circulating on Covid. An experiment that in fact does not demonstrate the unreliability of the swabs, since they have certainly not been tested to work on a kiwi.

Among other things, there are also those who have redone the experiment (a surgeon) obtaining an exactly opposite result.

We emphasize that the typical coloring of the test (which recalls pregnancy as a detection mechanism, but clearly it is not at all), can also be obtained by making the kit react with other chemical compounds, perhaps even those of the kiwi.

The fact that the color may be the same doesn’t mean that the test detected SARS-CoV-2, or even another coronavirus.

It just means that another chemical reaction has taken place that has led to the formation of a compound of the same color (not including that the human eye is not as sensitive as you think).

For this reason, the tests are developed subject to certain conditions, in this case that the samples are human, precisely to prevent other samples, chemically made of something else, from inducing reactions with only “eye-metrically” similar results.
