Positive case in Guimarães Fire Department places 20 in quarantine

The curator Marta Mestre was announced today as the new curator-general of the José de Guimarães International Arts Center (CIAJG), in Guimarães, at the press conference to present the city’s cultural equipment program.

According to Ricardo Freitas, executive director of A Oficina, which manages the cultural facilities in Guimarães, Marta Mestre was chosen from 26 candidates, all with “excellent curricula”.

Marta Mestre will replace Nuno Faria, who was in office for six years, but who in 2019 took over the curatorship of the City Museum, in Porto.

The replacement process began in January, but has since come to a halt because of the covid-19 pandemic.

Born in Beja and currently residing in Lisbon, Marta Mestre today expressed her intention to move to Guimarães, stressing the importance of “proximity” to know and work with the local artistic fabric.

The new curator promised “a program of continuity but also of change”, always with the premise of international quality.

“What comes next will continue to bring news,” he said.

Graduated in Art History by the University of Lisbon, with a master’s degree in Culture and Communication / Museology by the University of Avignon, in France, she was curator of the Inhotim Institute, in Minas Gerais (2016-2017), assistant curator of the Museum of Modern Art, from Rio de Janeiro (2010-2015), guest curator and teacher at the School of Visual Arts Parque Lage, also in Rio de Janeiro, in 2016.

In Portugal, among other activities, she was curator of the Centro de Artes de Sines (2005-2008).

She was distinguished within the scope of the Curatorial Laboratory of the São Paulo Art Biennial 2012, according to Portal Pipa dedicated to the contemporary art sector in Brazil.

The CIAJG, resulting from Guimarães – European Capital of Culture, in 2012, is a museum that, in addition to the collection of artist José de Guimarães, also includes a program of temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.

The name of Marta Mestre was announced at the press conference to present the cultural program, until the end of the year, of A Oficina, the entity responsible for the entity for the municipal cultural facilities of Guimarães, including the CIAGJ.
