Portuguese crew member hospitalized in Japan

One of the five Portuguese crew members of the Diamond Princess has been hospitalized for several days in Japan. The information was confirmed, this Sunday night, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to JN, revealing that the coronavirus analyzes were negative.

This is a crew member who is part of a group of five Portuguese who have been working on the ship docked in the Japanese port of Yokohama since the beginning of the month, under quarantine measures and where the first case was diagnosed in a Portuguese, Adriano Maranhão.

To JN, official source of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE) explained that “the Portuguese authorities have been, for several days, following the case of one of the Portuguese crew members of the ship Diamond Princess, who is hospitalized in Japan and who tested negative for infection with the new coronavirus “.

“The national citizen is well and has had the support of the Portuguese authorities, namely the consular entities present in the country”, explained MNE, who stressed that this citizen “expressed the desire not to make his situation public”.

This case was reported by one of the Portuguese on the ship, Hélder Silva, who told RTP that one of the five nationals on board (there will no longer be passengers on the ship) would have left for “a clinic or hospital” several days ago. The reasons for the hospitalization were not revealed.

Adriano Maranhão, the only member of the group who found positive, remains isolated in the cruise cabin, owned by the American multinational Princess Cruises, awaiting transfer to a hospital.

Positive on return to the UK

Of the 3711 people on board – taking into account that only the crew will now be there now – the Diamond Princess has registered, so far, 630 patients infected with the virus. The vessel has been in quarantine since February 5 and has become the biggest source of contagion outside China.

This Sunday, four of the 32 British passengers on the ship who had returned home tested positive for COVID 19, after having completed two weeks of quarantine on the ship and having been authorized by the Japanese government to leave the country. These four cases bring the number of people infected in the UK to 13.
