Portugal is the 3rd EU country with more cases of Covid-19 per inhabitant – Executive Digest

Portugal is the third country in the European Union (EU), with more patients infected with Covid-19 per million inhabitant, behind Spain and Belgium, according to ‘SATURDAY’.

The two countries register 251 and 305 active cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, respectively. Portugal currently has 126 active cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, and there is no other country with more than 100 active cases in this indicator.

If we speak only of active cases, which concern patients who are currently infected, Portugal is in fifth place, surpassed by Spain, Belgium, France and Italy.

In turn, with regard to the total number of cases, Portugal occupies the seventh position, with more than 42 thousand infections registered since the beginning of the epidemic, in March this year.

The fact that Portugal occupies the third position in the number of infected per million inhabitant, is related to the low number of patients recovered in our country, in comparison with others in the EU. Practical examples since then are Germany, which despite registering almost 200 thousand cases of the disease, 180 thousand people are already recovered. The same is true for Italy, out of the 240,000 infected, over 190,000 have recovered.

The same is not true in Portugal, where there are only about 27,000 recovered and 13,060 active cases. Despite the fact that the epidemiological situation in our country has improved in June, the cases of the disease increased again, with the various outbreaks in the region of Lisbon and the Tagus valley, which caused the numbers of infected to reach close to those seen in April.
