Portugal in the top 10 of European countries with more cases per 100 thousand inhabitants

In proportion, the scenario of the evolution of the pandemic in Portugal is more worrying than in many of the countries most affected by Covid-19 at European level. The ECDC data revealed earlier this week, with reference to the last 14 days (until November 23), show that Portugal is one of the countries in Europe with the highest number of cases per 100 thousand inhabitants.

In the last 14 days, Portugal registered, on average, 792.4 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, a figure that is ahead of what was registered by more harassed countries or where the pandemic has been evolving in a worrying way, such as Italy, Sweden, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, or Belgium.

Ahead of Portugal only seven other countries: Luxembourg, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Liechtenstein, Poland and Lithuania.

At the end of the table, there are Nordic islands or countries, namely Norway, Ireland, Finland and Iceland, the latter with only 55.7 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants.

Regarding deaths, Portugal drops some positions and comes in 14th in the number of deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants (9.7 deaths). The Czech Republic leads the way in this specific point, followed by Belgium, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary and Italy.

Even so, Portugal appears ahead of other countries where the pandemic has most saturated health systems, from the United Kingdom or neighboring Spain.

Looking at the map of Europe released on Monday by ECDC, it is possible to perceive the evolution of the pandemic by regions. Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Belgium and the north of Italy and the south of France are home to the most affected regions, with more than 960.0 cases reported per 100,000 inhabitants.

Outside this central area, the Northern region of Portugal it is one of the few that achieves these values. In the last few weeks, the North region has been in the last few weeks the most harassed in the country, with the highs that are also registered in the most affected countries in Europe.

But the map reveals that the North region is also the one that presents, at this moment, the worst scenario of the entire Iberian Peninsula regarding the number of confirmed cases in proportion.

Of the remaining regions of Portugal, Lisbon and Tagus Valley is the second most affected, with between 480 and 959.9 confirmed cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, being at the same level as practically all regions of Spanish territory, for example.

Looking at Northern Europe, highlight to Finland, which had a residual evolution of the pandemic in the last 14 days, registering less than 20.0 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants in a large part of the territory.
