Portugal falls in the middle of the European minimum wage table – Employment

Portugal is in tenth place in the table that organizes the minimum wages of 21 European countries, from the highest to the lowest.

This data was released this Friday, February 5th, by Eurostat, and Portugal appears in tenth place with a minimum wage of 776 gross euros, since the statistics office chose to monthly dilute the value of the 13th and 14th Months, which are not a common policy across Europe.

In the division that is made by the European statistical office, Portugal is included in an intermediate group, with minimum wages that vary considerably between 700 and 1,500 gross euros per month. This group includes Greece (758 euros), Portugal (776 euros), Malta (785 euros), Slovenia (1,024 euros) and Spain (1,108 euros).

At the lowest end are Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania, with 332 euros, 442 euros and 458 euros, respectively. The highest minimum wages are for Luxembourg (2,202 euros), Ireland (1,724 euros) and the Netherlands (1,685 euros).

Taking into account the purchasing power parity, the lowest minimum wage, Bulgaria’s, is 623 euros and Luxembourg’s is 1,668 euros, so the highest is 2.7 times the lowest. Without parity, Luxembourg’s minimum wage exceeds Bulgaria’s by 6.6 times.

Portugal is still highlighted in another group: the group of countries where the minimum wage represents more than 60% of the median value. In Portugal, this percentage is 64%, in Slovenia it is 62%, in Romania it is 61% and finally in France, the only one of the four that is part of the group of the highest minimum wages, it shows a percentage of 66%.
