Port of Montreal longshoremen back to work

Two weeks after the strike started at the Port of Montreal, the majority of longshoremen were happy to return to work on Sunday morning.

Those passing by the port could see the cranes resuming moving containers stacked on the quay for two weeks due to the labor dispute between the longshoremen and the Maritime Employers Association (AEM).

“Always happy when you work. We’re going back to work and that’s a good thing, ”said an employee he met upon entering the Port in the morning.

“After several weeks, it feels good to come back to work. Everyone is happy to work. I’ve been working here for 43 years and I’ve never experienced this. It shouldn’t have happened and it should never happen again, especially for younger workers, ”said a second employee who was also starting his first shift in two weeks.

The unlimited general strike by the Port of Montreal longshoremen began on August 10. Without a collective agreement since 2018, union members could not come to an agreement with the AEM on working hours and wages outside the day-to-week time slots.

The two parties reached an agreement in principle last August 21 providing for a seven-month truce, i.e. until March 20, 2021, and the resumption of activities on Sunday August 23 at 7 a.m.
