One-of-a-Kind Porsche 959 Speedster Heads to Auction
A unique Porsche 959 speedster, born from a silver 959 coupe, is set to be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s.The 1987 Komfort model underwent a remarkable transformation into a convertible after an accident on the autobahn in 1988.
The conversion, requiring 4,000 hours of meticulous work, included a complete rebuild of the bodywork,a fresh coat of white paint, and the creation of a removable hard top.
While automakers today are speedy to release convertible versions of their supercars, Porsche never produced a 959 convertible. This particular Speedster is the brainchild of Karl-Heinz feustel, a Porsche racer who owned his own shop.
The original 959 Komfort was delivered to Jürgen Lässig, a racing driver who won the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1995 and placed second at Le Mans in 1987. After Lässig’s accident, Feustel acquired the car and began the extensive conversion process.Feustel’s team removed the coupe roof and installed an electrically operated soft top.The sale includes a removable hard top with its own carrying case, as well as a second case containing a low-cut windshield for a more traditional Speedster look, reminiscent of the 356 and 911 Speedsters.
