KOMPAS.com – The news about Covid-19 which is predicted to be endemic is still in the news popular Science.

Moment Covid-19 is endemic, meaning that we have to live side by side with the SARS-CoV-2 corona virus for several years or decades.

Even though it is endemic, the impact of risks from Covid-19 such as morbidity, mortality and lockdown will decrease over time.

Well, what would happen if Covid-19 became endemic was also thoroughly discussed by experts.

Another popular news is the sky phenomenon in March 2021 which will decorate Indonesia’s skies until the impact of Covid-19 office cluster on the family.

The following is a review of Monday’s edition of popular science news (1/3/2021).

1. What does it mean if Covid-19 is endemic?

Researchers say the future will largely depend on the type of immunity people acquire through infection or vaccination and how the virus evolves.

If Covid-19 becomes endemic, this will be like influenza and four other diseases caused by corona viruses that are also endemic.

The data show that the combination of annual vaccines and immunity acquired from disease infections helps humans tolerate seasonal deaths and illnesses without the need for lockdowns, masks and distancing.

In addition, experts say that 5 years from now, when parents find out their child has a cold and fever, the Covid-19 pandemic may seem like a memory.

No more fear like now.
This is one of the scenarios that scientists predicted for SARS-CoV-2.

The virus remains, but once people develop immunity to it – either through natural infections or vaccinations – they will not become infected with severe symptoms.

“The virus will be an enemy that is first encountered in childhood, when it usually causes mild or no infection,” said Jennie Lavine, an infectious disease researcher at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, reported by Nature.

Scientists think this is possible because the four endemic coronaviruses in the world, namely OC43, 229E, NL63, and HKU1, have such behavior.

2. Covid-19 is predicted to be endemic, this is the expert’s response

The World Health Organization (WHO) and more than 100 experts stated that the SARS-CoV-2 corona virus, which causes Covid-19, will not disappear, but will become endemic.

Reported by BMJ, February 18, 2021, the prediction comes from a survey conducted in January by the journal Nature of more than 100 immunologists, infectious disease researchers, and virologists who deal with SARS-CoV-2.

The data shows that nearly 90 percent of respondents said they expected the corona virus to be endemic. And a third of respondents think that it is possible to eliminate SARS-CoV-2 from several regions of the world.

“Although there will be a risk of a Covid-19 outbreak in these areas, this can be contained by herd immunity. That is, if most people have been vaccinated,” said Christopher Dye, an epidemiologist at the University of Oxford, UK.

“I think Covid will disappear from some countries. But there is a risk of this disease being sustainable and possibly seasonal, especially in places where vaccine coverage and public health measures are not good enough,” he added in an interview with Nature.

Covid-19 is currently classified as a pandemic phase because infections continue to increase worldwide and many people are still vulnerable.

In the endemic phase, the number of infections remains relatively constant over the years, with occasional relapses.

3.The celestial phenomenon in March 2021

The celestial phenomenon becomes an interesting event for some people to observe and witness it.

In March 2021, there will be at least 10 phenomena that will adorn Indonesia’s skies, including the conjunction of the Moon, Mars and Aldebaran.

Here’s the complete list:

  • The Mercury-Jupiter-Saturn conjunction triple: March 1-17, 2021
  • Solar Vesta’s Opposition: March 5, 2021
  • Neptune’s Solar Conjunction: March 11, 2021
  • Aphelion Mercury
  • The peak of the Gamma Normid meteor shower: March 14-15, 2021
  • Moon-Mars-Aldebaran Conjunction Triple: March 19
  • Equinox March: March 20, 2021
  • Conjunction of Superior Venus: March 26, 2021
  • Opposition Solar Makemake: March 27-28, 2021
  • Monthly Peridge: March 2 and 30, 2021

4. Impact of Covid-19 office clusters on families

Experts assess that the impact of Covid-19 transmission in office clusters has a profound impact on families.

This was conveyed by DR. dr. TB. Rachmat Sentika SP.A, MARS, KOMDA KIPI Banten in the 2021 Online Webinar and Media Gathering, Update on Covid-19 & Vaccinations, last Thursday (26/2/2021).

Since the corona virus pandemic was announced to have entered Indonesia, the level of family anxiety has increased.

According to Dr. Rachmat, apart from the pandemic itself, the causes of anxiety for Indonesian families due to Covid-19 include factual information, myths to hoaxes or false news about this new disease outbreak.

“It should be noted that (families in Indonesia) more than 68 percent (are) extended family, which consists of a minimum of three generations. There are fathers, mothers, children, grandchildren, grandparents,” said Dr. Rachmat.
