Poll: Relatives’ disputes occur more often in the Covid-19 distribution phase than in spring – in Latvia – News

The growing prevalence of Covid-19 is a major challenge not only for the Latvian health care system, but also for the mental health of the population and interpersonal relationships. The authors of the survey explain that rapid changes in everyday life, anxiety about health and the future, as well as teleworking and children’s education create additional burdens and can also exacerbate relationships.

Of all the respondents who indicated that disputes with relatives are more common now, 3% said that it is much more common, and the remaining 10% that it is a little more common than usual.

Also, the latest survey data show that 78% of respondents have not changed Covid-19’s relationship with relatives, but 5% have expressed the opinion that there are fewer disputes now than before Covid-19. The remaining 4% could not provide a specific answer.

Maija Biseniece, a systemic family psychotherapist and doctor of pedagogy, explains that researchers in several fields of psychotherapy have distinguished the phases of human reactions in crisis situations, where everyone has different feelings.

According to her, the first of the feelings is shock – internal dizziness, emotional anesthesia, followed by the next phase with the feeling that “it is a mistake”, “it does not happen – it can not be”, because the psyche tries to escape of these events. Then begins the protection mechanism – denial – resistance to complex information, such as that a person is infected.

As people come to terms with the event, they enter a phase of anger and blame. Probably everyone has felt the desire to blame the governments, health organizations or peers of different countries, the expert notes. Behind the strong anger are other deeper feelings – helplessness, vulnerability and loss of control.

During this pandemic, researchers point out that there is a clear feeling that control of the world is no longer in the hands of the people themselves. Then there is a desire to join a conspiracy theory that distracts from the unpleasant feelings of loss of control over one’s life because they offer a simple explanation.

Lack of control can also lead to panic fears, deep despair, panic attacks and feelings of loneliness, leading to isolation and depression, characterized by anxiety and confusion and characteristic psychosomatic manifestations. The expert emphasizes that during this time there is a marked internal struggle between two different trends. On the one hand, there is a desire for nothing to change and the situation to be the same as before, but on the other hand, there is an understanding that changes and constraints are to be adapted.

Biseniece points out that both in society as a whole and in each family individually, each person experiences the emotional fluctuations caused by Covid-19, and the relationship is especially damaged when anger or irritation is used to solve various issues. Nowadays, a lot of time is spent together and relatives come into much closer contact, which is probably different for many people from the usual daily rhythm.

In addition, as the expert notes, it is necessary to share space, time, computers and other household items that can cause misunderstandings and conflicts. A fair distribution of time and responsibilities is also important. For example, if both parents have to work from home and also perform parental responsibilities following the child’s learning, then a clear and fair agreement is needed. Otherwise, conflicts are inevitable, Biseniece points out.
