Dr. Khatuna Tchanturia, educationalist and freelance lecturer in Stuttgart, outlines profound changes in the Georgian education system in her contribution and presents the central results of her empirical study on political education and youth participation in Georgia. In Georgia, even more than in Western Europe, there is a very high level of interest in major social issues such as environmental protection and nuclear power and the willingness to help and get involved. On the other hand, there is at the same time a pronounced mistrust in existing political structures, parties and organizations: »It makes sense to say that citizens value democracy, not because they know the advantages of a functioning democracy well enough, but because they have experienced negative consequences that citizens have to bear in a non-democratic social order. “
