A few weeks ago, Kaczynski – whose twin brother Lech, then president of Poland, died in a tragic plane crash in Russia – traveled to Kiev. He accompanied Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who supported Ukraine with some Eastern European colleagues.
The European Court, the European Commission in Brussels and the Polish opposition say that Kaczynski, who became Prime Minister in 2006, has systematically demolished the rule of law in the former Eastern Bloc country. The independent judiciary was increasingly put under pressure and press freedom was increasingly threatened by years of state propaganda and opposition from journalists.
