Polish government’s COVID medical adviser resigns en masse, here’s why

Warsaw

As many as 13 of the 17 government medical advisers Poland related corona virus resigned en masse. This happened because medical advisers were disappointed and accused the Polish government of inaction in the face of the pandemic.

Disappointed members of the COVID-19 medical advisory committee said they quit because of the lack of impact their recommendations had on government action. The announcement of the resignations of medical advisers came just days after the country of 38 million recorded its 100,000th death from COVID-19.

Doctors allege that the government is increasingly tolerating the behavior of some people who deny the threat posed by COVID-19 and the importance of vaccination to combat the pandemic.

“Members of the government and other authorized figures have also denied the risk,” their representative said.

Advisers blame the government for very limited action to counter a spike in cases in the fall or face the threat of an Omicron variant, even though a staggering death toll is predicted. As of Friday (14/1), the country has recorded 4.28 million cases of COVID-19 and 101,841 deaths due to exposure to the Corona virus.

Friday’s mass resignations followed repeated calls by members of the advisory committee for tighter COVID restrictions and a more proactive vaccination campaign.

Several lawmakers from the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party have publicly opposed COVID vaccinations and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s government is counting on their support in parliament.

Poland’s Ministry of Health said about 21.3 million Poles had two coronavirus shots and more than eight million people had booster shots.
