Polish Chamber of Commerce against the temporary lifting of the ban on Sunday trading

The Senate has prepared a draftwhich assumes that in the state of an epidemic or epidemic threat and 90 days after its end, there would be no trade ban. Senators submitted the draft to the Sejm. Against this proposal the prime minister has already spoken Mateusz Morawiecki, who stated that “for the time being such a solution has not been taken into account”.

However, PIH issued a position, in which it was written: We are surprised to receive the submission to the Sejm of the draft act lifting the ban on Sunday trading in a state of epidemic and within 90 days after its end; We observe with concern that, inspired by large-format chains and discounters, attempts are being made to liberalize regulations, taking advantage of the difficult situation in which we all find ourselves. – Our task is to constantly remind that releasing Sundays will harm small Polish stores, which often fight for survival – comments Maciej Ptaszyński, vice president of the Polish Chamber of Commerce, quoted in the statement.

The Chamber cites an example Czechwhere, due to the epidemic, shops are closed on Sundays, except for those located at stations or airports. According to PiH, “the opposite direction proposed in Poland will encourage customers to leave their homes, which will inevitably translate into worsening of the difficult epidemic situation.” Proponents of loosening the ban cite the same argument, but draw different conclusions: shops open on Sundays will take people out of their homes, but that way will be looser in shops on other days of the week.

Smog and coronavirus transmission. “We run the program for the poorest”

– In the current situation, the suspension or amendment of the law restricting trade on Sundays would cause severe perturbations on the market, serious organizational problems for small and medium-sized enterprises, increased costs and serious challenges when it comes to filling jobs, especially now, when several hundred thousand people are in quarantine – he argues PIH.

The Polish Chamber of Commerce brings together over 30,000 Polish stores, food and drugstore wholesalers, as well as service companies.
