Polio in sewer from employee BBio

The polio virus that was found in the sewerage of the Utrecht Science Park in De Bilt on 21 July appears to come from an employee of Bilthoven Biologicals (BBio).

The virus was no longer found in later samples. There has been no danger to public health. This is the conclusion of the Health Care and Youth Inspectorate after investigation.

The faeces of 65 people who had worked with or had access to poliovirus material at BBio or RIVM. None of the samples contained the polio virus. Blood tests were also carried out on 101 employees, which revealed the BBio employee. The employee was properly vaccinated and therefore did not become ill himself.

The IGZ has informed Regio TV De Bilt by telephone that BBio will have until November 4 to indicate how a researcher could become infected with the virus.
