A demonstration against police violence went awry this weekend in Detroit. A police vehicle rolled through the crowd, injuring several people in the process.
A new Black Lives Matter event took place this Sunday evening in Detroit. If the latter was peaceful, events quickly took a violent turn. The police present on the scene attempted to circulate the crowd in a direction opposite to the path they had taken. It was then that several protesters surrounded a police SUV, chanting anti-racist slogans: “No justice! No peace”. The vehicle then advanced, despite the crowd gathered around it. He repeatedly accelerated, projecting several demonstrators who were on the hood. On the filmed images of the scene, we hear several people shouting and asking the driver to stop. The vehicle eventually ran away while the protesters continued to run after him.
Several people had to be hospitalized after the incident. “This is what we are walking for. The police feel that their badge gives them the power to do harm and damage in all circumstances,” a protester told a local TV station. Detroit police have yet to make an official announcement, awaiting more information. According to initial reports from the police department, the officer tried to escape because demonstrators broke one of the windows of his vehicle. The driver in question has still not been identified.
