Police send hack warning to 50,000 email addresses

The addresses, along with passwords, were found in an investigation into a cybercrime by the Belgian police. It is suspected that these are login details for accounts at web shops. Wehkamp and Otto are mentioned by name in the message.

The police do not yet know how the data was collected and whether it has been misused. As the investigation is still ongoing, no further information is provided.

Met the alert email does the police want to advise people to change their passwords on all accounts linked to the email address. It is not recommended to reuse the same password for multiple accounts.

It has never happened before that the police have sent such a warning email. A spokesman tells the ANP that the police considered this such a concrete case that they wanted to inform those affected as a precaution.

Suspect arrested

The addresses were discovered in the context of a Belgian criminal investigation into cybercrime. At the request of the Belgian police, a suspect was arrested in the east of the Netherlands and data carriers were seized and investigated. The accounts were then found. The investigation remains with the Belgian police.
