Searches of a total of fourteen apartments, garages and commercial properties in Viersen and Mönchengladbach took place on Wednesday, October 13th. This is reported by the Krefeld public prosecutor and the Kleve Federal Police Inspectorate in a joint press release. A total of 300 officers were on duty. The Federal Police Inspectorate in Kleve carried out the extensive search measures in a preliminary investigation on behalf of the Krefeld public prosecutor.
As the report goes on to say, the investigation is directed against a group of ten German and Polish nationals as suspects on suspicion of commercial theft of goods worth at least 520,000 euros in more than 25 cases and stolen goods in four cases. They are accused of commercial theft of cargo through break-ins in truck semitrailers and containers in the rail freight sector. Among other things, tools, clothing, computers and other technical accessories were looted. The systematically planned break-ins took place nationwide in North Rhine-Westphalia, including in Kaldenkirchen, Duisburg, Neuss and Cologne as well as in Hanover.

During the search, a pre-trial arrest warrant against the main accused was carried out and extensive evidence was seized in the form of items of clothing originally packaged as stolen goods, cell phones and data carriers. Small amounts of narcotics were also seized in the apartments.

The Krefeld District Court ordered two property arrests. As the Federal Police explained in the report, an asset arrest is used to withdraw access to assets. Victims can be compensated from the inventory.

The Federal Police was commissioned with the investigation by the Krefeld public prosecutor in September 2020 and carried out extensive research into the facts in advance. The outcome of the investigation was the breaking open of railway containers at the Kaldenkirchen train station on the night of September 29th to 30th, 2020. The Federal Police first became aware of the suspects’ approach.
