“Police officers buy equipment because they want to” – Jornal Económico

The Minister of Internal Administration guarantees that the Government is increasing investment with the security forces, either through increased funds or more hires. In interview with TSF, published this Sunday, Eduardo Cabrita says that the demands of the unions have been heard.

Asked about news regarding agents who buy protective equipment with personal funds, Eduardo Cabrita said that “they buy because they want to and they have no need to do so. It is necessary to say it with all transparency ”.

“There are subjects that are different, that are uniforms, in which there is a subsidy. But what is considered necessary by the commands is what is assigned ”, he added.

The supervisory minister also explained “the mechanism that gives us flexibility, that is, it is not subject to the annual negotiation of the Budget – the 450 million euros go until 2021, but they do not have to be rigid; we have a reference of 90 million / year ”.

“For example, last year we spent more than 100% of the initial forecast on vehicles and personal protective equipment. We spent less on infrastructure, why? Because there is a different work cycle. It is necessary to carry out the project, launch the tender and, therefore, the expenditure on construction work will be concentrated in 2021 because the works – some of which are already done and will be inaugurated – have a cycle that is different from buying radars, alcohol meters, vests, which are faster things ”, he added.

Regarding the announcement of the hiring of ten thousand new professionals for the security forces, he said that the needs of each one are not yet closed, but it is already identified that by age limit, around eight thousand people will leave the various forces by 2023.
