The Police are handling a possible theory related to the murder of a 39-year-old American tourist registered on Saturday, February 1, on Ponce de León Avenue, in Santurce.
The director of the Homicide Division of Criminal Investigation Corps (CIC) of San Juan, Ángel Martínez, explained to The new dayto which they managed to arrive at a theory after interviewing the friendships with which Andrew James Coyle shared prior to the attack against him.
Martinez warned that “Because it is an ongoing investigation” I couldn’t share the theory with the press.
“We have an idea of what happened there. However, that is part of the investigation and we will not go into the details. Of the interviews, which have been conducted, we already have a theory, ”said the lieutenant to questions from The new day.
Coyle, a Colorado resident, was intentionally hit after being thrown from a moving vehicle in front of the Metro Plaza Tower condominium.
The individual, who was visiting the island for the first time, was transported to the Río Piedras Medical Center, where he was being held with brain death connected to machines until today, when he was disconnected by decision of the relatives.
So far, the CIC does not have a person of interest or possible suspects. Right now, the police investigation is focused on getting the vehicle from which the young man was launched and subsequently run over.
“The research is focused on getting the bus and the owner. But, the investigation is well advanced. We have not been able to identify people of interest in the case or possible suspects, but we are in the investigation process, and we have a theory of what happened there from the interviews that have been done. In that area we have two or three cameras from different places, ”added the officer.
Initially, the young man’s death was investigated by the authorities as an accident with a serious pedestrian. But, after seeing some of the videos captured by the security cameras in the area, the agents reclassified the case as a murder.
In the video of the aggression it is observed how the subject is thrown from a moving vehicle and falls on the road. Subsequently, the driver of the vehicle reverses, managing to run over his victim.
“We got the place where he was staying. He had brain death. There was a big blow to the head. In the video you see when it hits your head ”, revealed the agent.
Martínez said that, as part of the investigation, the officers also interviewed relatives.
The attacker used a dark colored Pathfinder to transport Coyle to the spot, launch him from the vehicle and roll him over.
Coyle is the second tourist killed on the island Since the year began, on February 3 a shooting in Santurce claimed the life of Mathew E. Stapula.
Stapula died in a shooting in front of an exotic dancers business, an American Airlines plane was supposed to fly to Philadelphia that day.
