It was not only at Heerenveen that it was restless last night. On the A50 highway near Apeldoorn, the fire brigade briefly extinguished several fires. According to a spokeswoman for the security region, it concerned hay bales and car tires that were on fire.

According to Rijkswaterstaat Traffic Information, protesting farmers threw ‘in great numbers’ hay bales into the verge of the road earlier in the evening and set them on fire.

The obstructions for shipping in the Princess Margriet Canal, the waterway between Lemmer and Delfzijl, are over. The bridge at Gaarkeuken can open again and will remain open all night to make up for the time lost for professional skippers, says Rijkswaterstaat.

On average, 45 professional ships sail through the canal every day. A total of about ninety professional vessels are affected by the blockage.

The bridge was blocked by farmers with tractors protesting the cabinet’s nitrogen policy. Last night the activists left, but because they had left a heavy mat behind, the bridge still could not open.
