Again thousands of people protest in several cities
Berlin (AFP) – The police acted more sharply against the demonstrators after the violations of the Corona protests over the weekend. In Stuttgart, the police imposed fines of around 20,000 euros for violations of the obligation to wear a mask, and in Munich the police issued 600 dismissals. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, meanwhile, sees an impending instrumentalization of the demonstrations by right-wing extremists.

In advance, several federal states and municipalities had adopted stricter rules for the demonstrations. In doing so, they reacted to the fact that distance rules and hygiene regulations were sometimes deliberately ignored.
In Stuttgart, for example, the authorities only allowed 5000 participants for the rally on the Wasen. This number of participants was quickly reached, which is why the demonstrators flowing further to the rally site had to be assigned a second meeting area. Several hundred people came there.
In the run-up, the city had significantly increased the fine for violations of the mask requirement to 300 euros as a deterrent. When arriving and departing by tram alone, more than 60 people without a mask were found and reported, with which the city can now collect fines of more than 18,000 euros.
In Munich, the city had only allowed 1,000 participants instead of the 10,000 registered participants because of the demonstrations that had spread the previous week and had moved the demonstration site from Marienplatz in the city center to the undeveloped Theresienwiese.
This upper limit was also quickly reached in Munich, according to the police, 2500 people had to be sent away from Theresienwiese. In some cases, these would have been closer together than allowed in the area surrounding the site. A total of over 600 references were issued, and more than 20 people were reported for violations of the Infection Protection Act. The police deployed a thousand officers.
Rallies also took place in other cities. In Berlin, where only meetings with up to 50 participants are allowed, there were 19 demonstrations and seven meetings. The police said that well over a hundred reports had been filed. There were also protests in Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Leipzig and Bremen. According to various media reports, a ZDF team was verbally attacked in Halle that the police had prevented an escalation.
Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Thomas Haldenwang told “Welt am Sonntag”, “We see a trend that extremists, especially right-wing extremists, are exploiting the demonstration.” What started on the Internet with propaganda, conspiracy theories and false news is now being carried into the real world. The President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution expressed concern that “extremists are using the current situation as much as in the so-called refugee crisis”.
Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) said the “Bild am Sonntag”: “I take every political expression seriously, but in this case it is difficult for me to deal with it.” The facts were “so clear on the table that you can’t seriously discuss whether Corona is a conspiracy”.
Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) called in the “BamS” not to discredit anyone “just because he disagrees”. The CDU politician had spoken to corona demonstrators in Dresden on Saturday, defending the measures to contain the pandemic.
According to a video posted on his Twitter account, Kretschmer said that he “could not sleep some nights” given the decision to close kindergartens or the retail trade. But in the end he was relieved that “there were no large truck columns with deaths like in Bergamo”.
