Polanski leads nominations for Cesar Film Award

The academy emphasized that it was “not an authority that must take a moral stance”. Academy President Alain Terzian said around 1.5 million French had seen Polanski’s film about the Dreyfus affair. “Ask them,” he said, referring to the Polanski debate in France.

Shortly before the film was released last November, a previous model had accused Polanski of raping her in 1975. The filmmaker denies the allegation. Women’s rights activists therefore called for the film to be discontinued. In the United States, the director faces a lawsuit over sex with a minor, which he conceded in 1977 before leaving the country forever.

Polanski’s “Intrigue” is about the Jewish officer Alfred Dreyfus, who was wrongly convicted of treason in France in 1894.

Director Ladj Ly’s thriller “The Furious” received 11 nominations each about tensions in a suburb of Paris and the comedy relationship “The most beautiful time of our lives” by Nicolas Bedos. The Cesars will be awarded on February 28th.
