Poland is battling the fifth wave of the coronavirus epidemic, Health Minister Adam Nedzelski was quoted as saying by Reuters today.
He warned that the spread of the new version of Omicron could lead to an unprecedented number of people infected.
New cases in Poland regularly exceed 10 thousand a day. Vaccination levels are estimated to be low for the EU, and anti-epidemic restrictions are not many, Reuters notes.
The health minister told a news conference that the peak of the current wave is expected in mid-February, when there will be about 60,000 cases a day.
In comparison, the highest number of newly infected people in Poland since the beginning of the pandemic was on April 1, 2021 – 35,251 people.
It is possible that there will be 20,000 new cases tomorrow, Nedjelski said.
On Friday, 13 of the 17 members of the Polish Medical Council, the prime minister’s advisory body on coronavirus issues, resigned, arguing that the government did not comply with scientific opinion when setting its policy.
One of those who withdrew, Dr Konstanty Shuldjinski, told Te Fau En 24 today that countries with tougher measures had lower death rates than Poland, and that the fifth wave would put an incredible strain on the health system.
