At 15:02 traffic was stopped at the Ludwigshafen motorway junction on the A61 in the direction of Koblenz due to a construction site. The 57-year-old driver of an articulated lorry entered the right-hand lane, recognized the end of the traffic jam too late and got into a Mercedes. The force of the impact pushed Mercedes into a van in front of it, which pushed into a Ford and Ford into a Mitsubishi. All vehicles involved were severely damaged. The truck and the three cars were no longer viable and had to be towed. The total damage is around 80,000 euros. The two occupants of the Mercedes, a 72-year-old woman and her 75-year-old husband, sustained minor injuries as a result of the accident and were taken to hospital by the emergency services for medical treatment. When the accident was recorded, Ruchheim highway police officials found that the semi-trailer tractor had been used with a foreign dealership license plate. According to the driver, he had bought the vehicle in Luxembourg and wanted to take it home with the license plate of the dealer in his home country. This is likely to be an unauthorized remote approval, investigations are ongoing. It was also found that the road tractor was not insured, the insurance coverage had expired the day before. Finally, the driver may have violated social norms. As the tachograph on the road tractor was defective, he was unable to insert the required driver card. Investigations were initiated against the 57-year-old and the owner of the semi-trailer and a deposit of 1,300 euros was withheld from the driver.

At the moment the Koblenz lane is still closed. As soon as the restoration and cleaning of the crash site is completed and circulation is released, the information will be provided via the traffic warning radio and on Twitter Rheinpfalz Police (@PP_Rheinpfalz) / Twitter
