Fraudsters also use WhatsApp to persuade contactees to transfer money on behalf of daughters, sons or grandchildren. The police have now become aware of cases in the municipality of Görwihl and the surrounding area where those contacted transferred money to the unknown.
Those contacted receive a WhatsApp message from a supposed family member saying that their cell phone is broken and that they now have a new cell phone number. Online banking is currently not possible with the new cell phone number, but one urgently needs to make a transfer and those contacted are asked to make this transfer for their relatives.
As is so often the case, those contacted transfer the requested money in the belief that they are communicating with their own child or grandchild. The police therefore advises to be particularly suspicious of WhatsApp messages from unknown numbers.
How to protect yourself against fraud via WhatsApp:
- Wenn Sie von Ihnen bekannten Personen unter einer unbekannten Nummer kontaktiert werden, speichern Sie die Nummer nicht automatisch ab.
- Fragen Sie bei der Ihnen bekannten Person unter der alten Nummer nach.
- Geldüberweisungen über WhatsApp und andere Messenger sollten immer misstrauisch machen und überprüft werden.
- Achten Sie auf die Sicherheitseinstellungen Ihres verwendeten Nachrichtendienstes
