Pogacar: “The Child in Me Disappears” – Cycling Star Shows Signs of Fatigue

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Tadej Pogačar, following a remarkable 2024 season that significantly elevated his profile and generated widespread interest beyond the cycling world, is reportedly contemplating retirement as early as 2028. The immense public attention he now commands presents a considerable challenge to his daily life, as described by his UAE team teammate and neighbor, Tim Wellens.

Potential 2028 Resignation

Wellens noted the constant demands on Pogačar’s time, stating, “His life is not easy. He comes down for breakfast, and there are twenty people who ask for his attention. He goes out and there are thirty others who are waiting, and the same in front of the bus.”

Former Tour de France winner Stephen Roche, who triumphed in 1987, commented on Pogačar’s character, observing, “He is a nice guy, it is tough for him to say no.” This sentiment echoes the views of Remco Evenepoel, another prominent cyclist who emerged at a young age. Evenepoel has frequently suggested that the increasing demands of professional cycling are leading to shorter career spans.

Pogačar, currently contracted wiht UAE Team until 2030, has indicated in an interview with the newspaper *L’Équipe* that he is not considering an immediate retirement.Though, he expressed a belief that his career will not extend for “too long.” He has specifically mentioned the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as a potential target for his farewell from the sport. This timeframe would allow him three years to perhaps challenge the record for the most victories in the Tour de France, the sport’s premier event.
