On August 14, 2021, rain fell over Idre Fjäll in Sweden as Hanna Lundberg, then 19, began the middle distance race at the orienteering World Cup. After a near-perfect run, she waited in the leader’s chair, watching as favorites faltered in the challenging mountain terrain. Ultimately, the Swedish junior runner found herself a World Cup champion.
