PlayStation 5 vs. Xbox Series X: A component could decide the fight

Both Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X will be the first home consoles to be equipped with an SSD – according to the latest reports, the installed hard drives are likely to differ significantly, particularly in terms of performance.

A contribution on LinkedIn, written by a former employee of the memory chip manufacturer Phison, suggests that the write and read speed of the Xbox SSD can only be equated with that of a PCIe 3.0 NVMe. The post doesn’t seem to be accessible anymore, but was shared as a screenshot on Twitter. This is surprising in that the SSD Microsoft is connected to PCIe 4.0, but its performance capacity should not be fully exploited. The ex-Phison employee states that Microsoft should probably rely on the cheaper model Phison PS5019-E19T.

According to the information, Microsoft will primarily rely on a very strong GPU in order to achieve the expected performance level. Sony, on the other hand, seems to want to take a different path.
