Players’ union angry at Lazio and Cagliari plan to start training again NOW

The Italian players union (AIC) is not pleased with the plan of Serie A clubs Lazio and Cagliari to resume training on Monday. The corona virus is still prevalent in Italy.

“We have denounced the behavior of certain clubs that want players to train during these days. Players should stay at home in this situation,” chairman and former player Damiano Tommasi told Wednesday Reuters.

Cagliari still takes some account of the widespread disease. The players will be divided into groups in accordance with the health rules and in that case not all of them will be on the field at the same time.

Lazio and Cagliari’s announcement to return to training nevertheless comes at a remarkable moment, as a record 475 people died in Italy on Wednesday from the effects of the corona virus.

More than 35,000 infections in Italy

Italy is the epicenter of the coronavirus within Europe. More than 35,000 infections have already been detected and a total of almost 3,000 people have already died of the COVID-19 virus.

Serie A was the first European top league to be halted due to the coronavirus outbreak. The competition will resume on April 3 at the earliest, but it is expected to take longer.

Lazio competes for the first league title in twenty years. The Romans have twelve rounds to go as number two is only one point behind leader Juventus, who has been the champion for the past seven years.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads through sneezes and cough drops. The virus can be transmitted directly from person to person or (for a limited time) through surfaces such as door handles.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Nearly all deaths involve the elderly or other frail, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
