Plan for power cable through Schiermonnikoog off the track for the time being

Research showed that the route through Schiermonnikoog was the best option. The more easterly route along the island would be technically too challenging.

But according to Omrop Fryslân the ministry has changed its mind after a new investigation. Seven variants are now being investigated, in which the eastern route seems to be preferable. Several cables and a gas pipeline are already there. In the future, this could be used for the transport of hydrogen that could possibly be produced at sea.

The reconsideration is also prompted by the fact that it is now becoming clear how much electricity will be generated at sea in the future. A large wind farm will be added in the easternmost part of the Dutch North Sea.

Damage to nature

There is hardly any support for the first plan – with a cable through Schiermonnikoog. Nature organisations, municipal politicians and residents of Schiermonnikoog are against it. They fear that the nature of the island will suffer irreparable damage, partly because the cables are laid through the dunes at a depth of eight meters.
