The painting “Tree Roots” was made on the last day that Van Gogh lived. “That it is his last work makes it even more exceptional,” says Teio Meedendorp, researcher at the Van Gogh Museum. “He must have walked past it often on the way to the vast fields behind the castle of Auvers, where he also painted several times in the last week and eventually got his hand.”
“The sunlight that Van Gogh painted indicates that the last brushstrokes were applied at the end of the afternoon, which provides information about the layout of this dramatic day,” adds Wouter van der Veen.
