Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to perform at Riga Jurmala Festival – Classical – Music – Culture +

The festival will take place next year from July 1 to August 28 on four weekends, with one international orchestra performing in each of them: the St. Petersburg Maria Theater Orchestra and conductor Valery Gergiev, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, Marisa János , and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra with conductor Manfred Honek.

According to the organizers of the event, the orchestra of the Janson Festival formed an orchestral musician this summer, with whom the Latvian conductor had a special relationship. In response to the unforeseen circumstances caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, these musicians wanted to pay tribute to Janson by coming together at the Riga Jurmala Music Festival. In 2022, they will collaborate with conductor Mekeli, who at the age of 25 became the principal conductor and artistic advisor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the musical director of the Paris Orchestra.

The performance of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under their musical director and conductor Honek will mark the return of US orchestras to European festivals following the cancellation of mass concerts caused by the global pandemic. The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra performed at the festival in 2019 and this season will perform with one of the legendary American conductors Thomas, while the St. Petersburg St. Mary’s Theater Orchestra, conducted by Gergiev, is one of the leading Russian orchestras in both opera and symphonic music.

Each guest orchestra is expected to give two evening concerts, and the third evening of the weekend will be dedicated to a solo concert with a soloist. The experience of visiting the festival will be complemented by the dual location of the “Riga Jurmala” music festival in Riga and Jurmala. The evening concerts are planned at the Latvian National Opera in Riga or at the open-air Dzintari Concert Hall in Jurmala, while the day’s concerts will take place at the Small Guild in Riga.

In 2022, the music education initiative “Riga Jurmala” Academy, which is organized in cooperation with the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, will continue during the festival. “Riga Jurmala” Academy provides opportunities for young musicians from Latvia and abroad for professional development by participating in master classes and working with artists from the 2022 festival program.

Tickets for all concerts of the festival are available from December 9 on the festival website “riga-jurmala.com”.
