Pilates Popularity Soars at USF St. Petersburg, empowering Students
ST. PETERSBURG, FL – A fitness trend is gaining momentum at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus: Pilates. Once a niche exercise method, Pilates is experiencing a surge in popularity nationwide and at USFSP, attracting students with its focus on results, accessibility, and a supportive community.
Instructor Lisa Flatt, a retired gymnastics coach and longtime conditioning trainer, has observed the growth firsthand. “In general, Pilates is on fire,” Flatt said. “It’s been around a long time, but in the last few years it’s exploded.” The appeal, she believes, lies in its ability to deliver tangible benefits without the intimidation often associated with othre fitness regimens.
Pilates emphasizes core strength, flexibility, and body awareness through controlled movements. Flatt encourages students to track their progress incrementally. “Ten classes, you’ll feel it.Twenty, you’ll see it. Thirty, other people will notice it,” she explained. However, she stresses that the biggest challenge is simply attending the classes. “Eighty percent of it is just walking in the door,” Flatt said, emphasizing the importance of consistent participation.
Beyond physical improvements, students report a significant boost in confidence that extends beyond the studio. student Rizzo described the classes as empowering, while Kellert noted that Pilates helped her overcome anxieties about working out in front of peers.
“It’s not just a social media trend,” said student Yale.”It’s very intentional, very arduous, and it empowers students to keep showing up.” He points to the broader impact of this empowerment, citing a student who was motivated to sign up for a 5K race after gaining confidence through Pilates.
As of October 13, 2025, the classes continue to fill, fostering a growing community centered around mutual support and personal growth. Yale believes the benefits of Pilates ensure its continued popularity. “I don’t know why Pilates would ever not be this popular,” he said. “We have so much prospect for growth.” He added, ”Knowing you’re capable of every movement empowers you to keep coming back…and builds your confidence in here, outside of here and in your classes.”
