Kharkiv is located in the northeastern part of Ukraine, only 40 km from the Russian border.

The city was subjected to intense Russian bombardment, with scores of residents killed and many city buildings destroyed by missile attacks.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said the school was attacked just days after Russia invaded Ukraine in February.
